Every Spring, the Lorain County Metro Parks increases its program offerings, gardens need tended, grass starts to grow, the golf course re-opens and visitation to the park increases. FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Greenhouse Technician

Location: Miller Nature Preserve

Rate of Pay: $17.12 per hour

Job Description: Performs various activities associated with the care, maintenance, development and operation of public gardens, nature preserve, greenhouse, buildings and grounds. Provides the public with park district information and education through personal contact, programs and exhibits. Performs a variety of clerical duties including taking reservations, greeting visitors, answering telephones, and maintaining files, records and reports. Works evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Job Qualifications: Completion of at least two years of college-level courses and three years’ work experi-ence in the horticulture, greenhouse and/or conservatory field with some time at a super¬visory level. Additional work in planting, fertilizing, pruning, cultivation of trees, shrubs and flowers or equivalent. Maintenance and mechanical experience is required. Experi¬ence should also include public presentation, customer service, scheduling of events and/or staff. Competence in computer use and office machines, data input, word processing, internet, data base, and spreadsheet applications. Must obtain Pesticide Applicator’s License within six (6) months of employment. Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and satisfactorily complete a background investigation. Lorain County Metropolitan Park District policy prohibits hiring new employees who use tobacco.

Park Maintenance II

Location: Vermilion River Reservation

Rate of Pay: $16.05 per hour

Job Description: Performs a wide range of general maintenance, repair, and construction activities while maintaining and improving the park district’s resources and facilities. Leads work crews, assists with project planning, and monitors park district grounds as assigned.

Job Qualifications: Completion of secondary education (high school or GED), (two years of college in the field of natural resources, education or related field preferred), and two years experience in the field of natural resources/parks; or related field experience in skilled or semi-skilled maintenance and repair experience, or experience in construction trades and operating heavy construction equipment or equivalent. Experience with directing others, assigning work orders, scheduling, and purchasing.

Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and undergo background check. May be required to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license and obtain a valid Ohio commercial driver’s license of the appropriate class and with the appropriate endorsement(s). Lorain County Metro Park District’s policy prohibits hiring new employees who use tobacco.

Park Manager

Job Description: Plans, directs, and coordinates the operation, maintenance and programs of the designated park, as well as protects park staff, visitors and park property in accordance with Park District policies, rules and regulations.

Job Qualifications: Completion of at least four (4) years of college-level coursework in the field of natural resources, parks and recreation, or closely related field; and a minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in management and administrative support. Peace Officer Commission preferred. Strong public relations, customer service, and organizational skills are necessary. Experience with maintenance and repair of equipment, assigning work orders, and scheduling and purchasing is required.

PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT

Maintenance

Location: Carlisle Reservation

Rate of Pay: $12.48 per hour

Job Description: Performs a wide range of custodial and general maintenance, repair and construction work. Sets up facilities for public and private functions. Performs mainly routine tasks in maintenance and landscaping. Empties and disposes of trash and cleans all areas of buildings. Maintains floors, restrooms, storage areas; cleans windows. Mows grass, prunes trees and bushes, shovels snow. Maintains inventory of supplies and equip¬ment. Inspects and secures buildings. Conducts public programs. Works at other park locations as needed.

Job Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and some work experience in the field. Ability to add and subtract. Basic computer skills. Able to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to conduct public programs. Ability to carry out instructions and work alone on many tasks. Knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods commonly used in custodial work. Must be able to operate a wide variety of hand and power tools. Knowledge and ability to perform grounds and building maintenance in various weather conditions. Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed. Must possess valid Ohio driver’s license and undergo background check. Water Safety Instructor

Location: Mercy Health & Recreation Center

Rate of Pay: $9.50 per hour

Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Facility Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructor is responsible for the implementation of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Programs. This is a part time position.

Specific Job Duties:
  • Ensures the safety of their students while teaching all levels of the American Red Cross learn to swim programs
  • Maintains open communication between parents and students
  • Successfully fills out all paper work associated with the learn to swim program
  • Attends in-services as required instructs with maturity, fairness, consistent, positive and corrective feedback
  • Put away all equipment used in class
Job Requirements:
  • Current certification with the American Red Cross in Water Safety Instruction
  • Current lifeguard certification desirable

SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT

Theatre Camp Counselor

Location: French Creek Nature & Arts Center

Rate of Pay: $9 per hour

Job Summary: Under the close supervision of the Camp Director, counselors will assist with the planning, design and implementation of French Creek Theatre’s two, week-long acting camps. All staff will be expected to create and lead theatre-based curricula to large groups of youth (grades 2-8), and assist in all day-to-day camp and facility-related operations as needed. This is a seasonal, part-time position.

Job Requirements: Applicants should have or be working toward a degree in theatre, performance or other related field(s). Theatre performance experience. Experience working with children. Reliable transportation.

Lifeguards

Splash Zone Aquatic Center and Mercy Health & Recreation Center are always looking for responsible individuals with good communication and swimming skills to be a lifeguard. Must have American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certifications. In the summer months we also look for lifeguards for Lakeview Beach. In addition to the certifications mentioned above, lifeguards at Lakeview Beach must complete Waterfront Lifeguard certification upon hiring.

Park Aide

The Park Aides perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled labor jobs in maintaining and improving Park District resources, including but not limited to: Clean park facilities; routine landscaping tasks (mowing, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, etc.); litter and trash pick-up; operate vehicles and equipment; repair building equipment, painting and staining.  Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs and participate in park safety programs as well as adhere to Park District policies and standards.
